Rules of Writing

I'm a co-founder of a couple of Twitter chats for screenwriting, and I was checking out the chat schedules today and came upon a revelation.
Ryne Douglas Pearson who you met in a blog last month with his favorite things, wrote the screenplay for my husband's favorite movie. KNOWING - The Movie

I was looking at his website because he's a guest on next week's Twitter chat called Scriptchat, and I saw this great post on the rules of writing, I wanted to share it with you. Check it out, you WILL learn something.

Writing a Novel

When writing a novel, publishing isn't the end game, selling is. And unlike writing a screenplay, you have to keep marketing and selling. Once a screenplay is written and sold, it's out of your hands, well sort of, at least if they bring on a new writer it's out of your hands. But the script is sold, and you are only selling one copy. With a novel, the hard work comes after you publish the book. Whether publishing with a traditional publisher, or self-publishing, you have to market the crap out of yourself and your book. Blog tours, radio shows, social media, you name it. And at the same time you have to write the next book, and the next... Marketing cuts into writing time and writing cuts into marketing time, and suddenly what was once a pleasurable "hobby" is now a serious business.
I love both aspects of being a novelist, but since I'm also writing screenplays, it seems my screenwriting time has almost vanished. I'm trying to work out the right schedule along with running my two businesses, and eventually I'll get it right.
So if you are reading this blog post, please check out my other blog for my author website, Whew, I've now done my marketing duty.

Have a good one.

Let Us Prey - My new novel is out this week.

My new novel is available at Barnes & Noble.
It will be available on Amazon later this week. I'll post the link when it's available.

Ready, Set....

Okay, not so much go. I've listed my novel on and I've given out coupons to a few people for reading and hopefully a review. I'm still waiting for B&N and Amazon to publish on their sites, but I'm patient.
The problem it that I now have to do more edits. Yup, you'd think after several reads, and a paid editor to take a look, that the novel should be near perfect, or perfect for that fact. But alas the words start to blur after umpteen reads. It takes just one more fresh pair of eyes, and then maybe one more.
So, did I jump the gun on publishing? I don't think so, but I'm just glad it's electronic and edits can still be made.
Here's to a great learning experience.

SINGER: See above. But I did recently download that Billy Joel Greatest Hits double album I loved back in the day. I still know every word.

Meet Malena Lott and her Favorite Things

Hi, I’m Malena Lott and these are a few of my favorite things.

ON MY iPOD: Everything my Michael Buble. Can't help it. I'm a sucker for his swoony ways. I've gone to see him in concert twice and this year I was on the floor level and - wait for it - he SQUEEZED MY HAND.

CURRENTLY READING: The Revenant by fellow Book End Babe blogger Sonia Gensler, a historical YA set in Oklahoma; and Over the Falls (ebook) by another real-life gal pal, Jenny Gardiner.

COLOR: Fire, love, stop, look-at-me RED.

CITY: Is this terrible - I can't think of a favorite city. I'm more of a nature-lovin' gal so I love any place with a lot of trees, flowers, trails and water. Favorite ISLAND? Kauai.

DREAM VACATION: I really want to go back to Kauai, but I'd really love to visit London and Paris in one fell swoop. A long, romantic swoop.

ACTIVITY: Reading and writing both set my soul a-fire, but I also love nature walks and experiencing new adventures with my family. I'd love to do a cross-country RV trip with them like my family used to do growing up.

BOOK: A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Named our younges Owen after the main character and it was the first novel my husband gave me when we were dating.

BOOK ON WRITING: On Writing by Stephen King. Solid, sage advice.

PLACE TO READ: On my deck, under a canopy of green and serenaded by the birds.

TV SHOW: Mad Men. Jon Hamm? More, please.

MOVIE: Don't laugh, but it's Mary Poppins. I can't think of a more feel-good movie, though you are welcome to go ahead and try.

SONG: Hmmm. Would probably be a Michael Jackson song. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and PYT always put a smile on my face. I also love the Paul and Michael duet, The Girl is Mine. And, yes, I cried for a week when MJ died. He was my first love.

SINGER: There's no voice like MJ, but my current fave is Michael Buble.

BAND: Love me some Lady Antebellum (country), though I hate associating seeing them live with PASSING OUT FROM THE HEAT. PSA: Do not wear denim, boots, and a long-sleeved shirt to an outdoor concert in June. *sigh*

ACTOR: I still crush on Brad Pitt in all his theatrical incarnations and Jon Hamm is proving to be great outside of Mad Men, too. His turn in Bridesmaids was priceless.

ACTRESS: I love Reese Witherspoon. Even her name is gorgeous: Reese Witherspooooooon.

PET PEEVE: Biting my nails (me) and the sound of people chewing gum (everyone else.)

MOST LIKE TO MEET: Oprah. She's my girl, and I don't care who knows it.

Malena Lott's latest ebook is her first novella, Life's a Beach, about what happens to two unlikely friends when karma and the Law of Attraction hit the beach. It can be found on Amazon for $2.99 at Her author website is
